Supporting Trade Development
On June 26th, Tom Tillman, Vice President Sales at Jersey Shore Steel Company, met with Senator Gene Yaw, Senator Joe Scarnotti, Representative Jeff Wheeland and Representative Michael Hanna to discuss foreign trade and the important role the DCED’s Office of International Business Development (OIBD) plays in supporting PA based companies, increasing their export sales. Joining in the discussion was Noel Long, Director of Export Development at SEDA-COG and Peter O’Neill, Executive Director, Center for Trade Development, DCED’s Office of International Business Development (OIBD).
Mr. Tillman provided the Legislators with background how SEDA-COG and the OIBD assisted JSS as a resource to help navigate the complexities of exporting. Understanding the seller’s risk and cost is extremely important when selling internationally. Gaining an understanding of Incoterms, Certificates of Origin, harmonized tariff schedules, compliance reporting and screening for denied parties are some of the areas that were assisted. The support was invaluable and allowed JSS to export nearly 500 tons of vineyard trellising products to Peru and Colombia in the past year.
The potential for similar business in the next five (5) years is quite good and JSS wants to be positioned to be a major supplier to this emerging market.
Senator Yaw, who serves the 23rd Senate District which encompasses Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Union counties, included the meeting in his E-newsletter published on Monday, June 28th. The full scope of the newsletter can be accessed by visiting www.senatorgeneyaw.com.
