JERSEY SHORE, Pa. — Jersey Shore Steel, a provider of domestic, angle steel to the mattress and furniture industry, is a finalist for two awards from The International Platts Global Metals Awards for 2014.

Nominations were received for companies located in 20 countries. This is the second straight year that Jersey Shore Steel is among the finalists, officials said.

Jersey Shore Steel is a finalist in the “Breakthrough Innovation of the Year” and “Industry Leadership” categories.

According to Platts, a McGraw-Hill company and leading global energy, petrochemicals and metals information provider, the first award category recognizes “exemplary performance in greater efficiency, higher productivity, better quality and lower environmental impact.” The industry leadership award recognizes “first movers, venturing away from the status-quo and willing to take risks with the courage and conviction to make fundamental changes in the way they operate,” the company said.

Jersey Steel, which says it makes steel with the highest recycled content and lowest level of energy consumption of any steel on the market, made operating improvements in 2013 that cut process water consumption in half – saving hundreds of thousands of gallons every day – and improved yield, company officials said.

They described the innovations as part of a larger commitment to sustainable steel manufacturing that includes using alternative energy to cut fossil fuel use. The company’s high-strength steel angles and shapes are used by leading brands of furniture, bedding support, orchard and vineyard support systems, signage and barricades, the company said.

In sharing the news of its finalist status with the Jersey Shore Steel rolling and fabrication divisions, both based in Pennsylvania, Jack Schultz, company president and CEO, noted the dedication and commitment of the firm’s employees.
